With many people journeying back home for the holiday season,
the day after Christmas in Kings Park has become a very special day.
It has turned into a "Reunion Day", an annual tradition for all
academy attendees and graduates.
Gathering at the VFW Post, the group has
the opportunity to meet up with old friends, make new acquaintances
and share their experiences. Kings Park may be a relatively small
school district, but over the years they have attracted many
candidates to attend the academies. High school students looking to
follow the same path were also welcomed to join in on the
camaraderie.
Welcome Home.... Thanks for
Your Efforts...

Kings Park's
Persons of the Year |
By Ken Kraska
|
|

Gail & Jack Hessel |
Each year the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce
chooses a person who has shown exemplary service to our community.
This year the Chamber struck gold when they chose to honor two
remarkable people, Gail and Jack Hessel. After all you can't
separate a dynamic duo.
In this world you come across many people, some who
will say and others who will do. Fortunately for our town we are
able to applaud a couple who "will do". Organizations such as the
Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Revitalization Committee, Bike & Hike
Committee, Father John Papallo Lodge Order Sons of Italy, Library
District, Department of Parks Smithtown Recreation, Sweetbriar
Nature Center, Greenbelt Trail, Kings Park Heritage Museum,
Smithtown Historical Society and the Kings Park School District to
name a few, have benefited from the Hessel's involvement and
dedication. Through the years, they have rolled up their sleeves and
have taken an active role participating in making Kings Park a
better place for all and for this we say....
Thank You! & Congratulations...

Kevin O'Hare |
Will be bestowed on Kevin O'Hare at the Chamber
of Commerce Dinner Dance to be held on March 11th at the Islandia

a twin brother, Brian and an older brother, Barry. His parents were
Vincent and Dorothy O’Hare. All three sons were born on Father’s
Day! Kevin is married to Mary Ann, a successful real estate agent,
and they have two daughters, Kimberly and Tarn, both of whom
graduated from Kings Park High School.
Kevin went to Vietnam as a Mortar Man, attached to the 25th
Infantry Division in Cu CM for 2 months. Then, due to his experience
in TV shows in New York City, Kevin was offered a position designed
to boost morale of the troops, working as MC for Bob Hope’s
Christmas Show. He then went on to put together shows that included
James Garner, Charlton Heston, Jonathan Winters, and Brian Kelly,
the star of the “Flipper” TV show. Three months later, Kevin became
the “Good Morning Vietnam DJ,” working out of Saigon. On his last
day in Vietnam, he was presented with the Bronze Star Medal for
taking shows to the front line and building up the morale of the
troops. He left Vietnam and reported to Stewart Air Force Base in
Newburgh, doing a morning radio show at WFMN-FM.
After returning home, he was employed by RJR Nabisco for 32 years,
retiring as Sales Manager in 1999. Kevin became a Special Assistant
to Congressman Rick Lazio until 2000 and then became Legislative
Aide to Legislator Andrew Crecca until October 2001. Since then, he
has been Events Coordinator for the Suffolk County Office for the
Aging.
A member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, the
American Legion, the Veterans of the Vietnam War, the Kings Park
Chamber of Commerce and the Smithtown Veterans Youth Program, Kevin
has always managed to find the time to give back to his community by
working on behalf of others. Kevin has served as President of the
Cooley’s Anemia Foundation; Veterans Emergency Transportation; and
the William H. Clayton Republican Club as well as being an officer
or board member of the Suffolk County Civilian Police Academy; the
Vietnam Veterans of America; the Smithtown Republican Committee; the
Suffolk County Veterans Advisory Board; and the Suffolk County
Senior Citizens Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Board of
Directors of WLIW-TV, Channel 21.
In addition to his Bronze Star in Vietnam, the Smithtown
Messenger has honored Kevin as one of Smithtown’s “Shining Stars”.
In the book, “Spirit of Bob Nope,’ there is a chapter dedicated to

Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian
of the year |
Press Release
|
|

Judy Bishop |
|
Anyone knowing Judith understands that she works at
avoiding the limelight. The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce could not
allow this to continue. Her selection as the Chamber's recipient of
the 2004 Humanitarian Award brings her to the forefront once and for
all.
Judy has been a single parent from the days when her three children
were in diapers. She worked two to three jobs to maintain her
independence and to provide for the children. All this and the
ideals of her parents left positive marks on her philosophy of life.
If there is a child in town suffering, Judy wants to relieve that
condition. In the last seventeen years Judy has produced record
setting Blood Drives for leukemia stricken children. One drive was
second only to a NY Islanders drive. Almost every year a pasta
dinner is developed and between ten to thirteen thousand dollars is
collected on one Friday night. Judy‘s ability to organize hundreds
into willing volunteers is amazing. Add Special Olympics, Superthon,
Pancake Breakfasts, Annual Circus, Chamber Bike Rally, Stuff a Bus,
and you have a woman who is dedicated to eliminate pain and
suffering.
Many times Judy just begins to work towards a goal and like a Pied
Piper individuals attach themselves to her task. The degree of
effort provided by Judy‘s crew is awesome. Filled with friendship
and warmth, children especially are soothed by the goals
accomplished. Throw in her role in the developing and maintaining
the Kings Park Heritage Museum and the caretaker of the Patriot Park
and its 9/11 Monument and you have a very busy lady. Until now her
name was never inscribed on most accomplishments. Judy Bishop just
may be the “heart” in what is the “spirit” of Kings Park.
Congratulations...

January 8th, 2005 marked the last
day of business for the Kings Park's landmark restaurant, Anna
Maria's. Having served our town for over 22 years the proprietors
and landlord failed to arrive at a meeting of the minds. forcing the
business to vacate.
Although they are closed, the restaurant's management
has indicated they are looking at other locations in the area to
re-open.
Good Luck...Sorry to See You Go...

NOWICK
REMINDS RESIDENTS TO UPDATE
THE ‘DO NOT CALL’ REGISTRY |
Press Release
|
|
Smithtown, NY – A new year brings many new
initiatives and provides many opportunities for individuals to
become better organized and prepare themselves for the coming year.
One complaint that is always heard from residents is the
proliferation of annoying telemarketing phone calls that are
received by families, often at the worst possible time. There
is a way to stop these phone calls, and all it takes is a few
minutes of time. The Do Not Call Registry has been in effect for
the past few years, but each home must register their phone number.
The Federal Trade Commission reminds consumers that the National Do
Not Call Registry accepts personal cell phone and home phone number
registrations (and has done so since it opened for consumer
registrations in June 2003.) There is no deadline to register
a home or cell phone number on the Registry. To register a telephone
number on the National Do Not Call Registry, or to file a complaint,
consumers should visit
www.donotcall.gov
or call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236).
