Summer wasn't
all fun and games as these volunteers can attest. Building on a
project created by Pastor Rick Crews of the Northshore Baptist
Church who last summer organized the black top paintings at the Fort
Salonga and Parkview elementary schools, the RJO Intermediate School
black top received a much welcomed face lift. A wonderful job well
done was completed with the assistance of Pastor Rick, RJO Principal
Mr. Massimo, teachers Miss Mann & Ms. Szatkowski and several student
and parent volunteers.
Great Work From
Fantastic People!

The Fort Salonga Association is proud to present a live
re-enactment of the legendary "Battle of Fort Slongo"
Performed By The Huntington Militia
Come Celebrate the 225th Anniversary |
|
As we
know it today, Fort Salonga is a very desirable place to
live. We have beautiful homes, spacious properties, great
schools, woods, water and a very convenient location.
Everything you could ask for. Fort Salonga’s roots can be
traced back to the to the British occupation of Long Island,
most notably Fort Slongo, as it was known then, was an
actual Fort. It was located on what is now Brookfield Road,
very near to what is now Callahan’s beach.
We were fighting for independence from England. Our
young Country was at war. Small militia units based in
Connecticut made countless raids on Long Island and British
shipping sailing the sound in the period between 1776 and
1781. The most famous of these raids was directed by Colonel
Benjamin Tallmadge who was in command of a sizeable force
across the sound in Connecticut. A small unit under the
command of Major Trescott was sent to attack the British at
Fort Slongo on Treadwell Neck, on October 2nd, 1781. This
unit crossed the Sound in Whaleboats under the cover of
darkness, overwhelmed the British the following morning
around 4:00 AM, burned the Fort, took prisoners, muskets and
a small cannon, then escaped back to Connecticut near
Norwalk. This became known as The Battle of Fort Slongo. A
member of Major Trescott’s unit received the highest
military medal of that time from General George Washington.
One of the first Purple Hearts was presented to Sergeant
Elijah Churchill, who played an important role in other raids
as well as The Battle of Fort Slongo. In our historic
section is a more detailed discussion of this historic day,
October 3, 1781
Join us on Saturday October 7th, 2006, to celebrate our
225th Anniversary at a reenactment of The Battle of Fort
Slongo, very near the exact spot. This event will be
sponsored by your Fort Salonga Association and
professionally performed by the Huntington Militia which was
established in 1653. Come out and enjoy a trip back in
history in a place we all know and love. Bring your family
and support and participate in the celebration at Callahan’s
Beach picnic area. (¼ mile east of IGA shopping center on
25A). As can be seen from the agenda below a number of
exciting events are planned.
