RJO Gets Extreme
Makeover Visit |
|
|

(LtoR) Seth Selesnow, Miss Kristen Esposito & Sal Ferro
Leo Pix |
On
May 24th Sal Ferro and Seth Selesnow, both of Alure Home
Improvements, visited Kristen Esposito’s fifth grade class to
discuss their experiences working with ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home
Edition (two home makeovers and one Manhattan apartment). In April,
Miss Esposito wrote a letter to Mr. Ferro, President of Alure, which
sparked the visit. While in the classroom, Mr. Ferro responded to
the students’ questions including what it is like to build a house
in such a short time, what inspires him to commit charitable acts,
and how it feels once you’ve been able to make a difference in the
lives of others. The students walked away with a true understanding
of the phrase, “It is better to give than to receive.” They also
came to the realization that you don’t have to be an adult or have a
lot of money to help others. Even the smallest contributions count,
which is why the change jar in Miss Esposito’s classroom continues
to fill up with money that will be donated to the Make A Wish
Foundation. Though it was stated that no one at Alure believes they
are heroes, Miss Esposito and her class know that they are heroes in
every sense of the word!

A Salute To A Hero |
Press Release

(LeoPix) |
An absolutely
gorgeous day made Eatons Neck even more beautiful than it is
normally The US Coast Guard Boat Station took this setting and
provided one man with the biggest surprise he had had in 60-years.
And, it was what happened 60-years ago the brought about the moment.
Thomas Sabatino, 90 , of Bay Shore was shot down and captured by the
Germans 60-years ago. Mr. Sabatino was reluctant to speak about the
terrible experience he encountered being a P.O.W. Ellen DaSilvia, RN
Therapist and Coast Guard Auxiliary member believed Mr. Sabatino's
war experience deserved recognition. The Coast Guard agreed and
supplied an outdoor tribute for an individual who suffered in WWII.
The young men and women of the Boat Station honored someone of the
service who served magnificently. Executive Chief Rick Ball read the
citation and presented a commemorative plaque to Mr. Sabatino.
Congratulations Mr. Sabatino...
Job Well Done!

Gregory Szurnicki |
Having
served as the voice of the Kings Park community for over thirty-five
years, Greg Szurnicki, President of the Kings Park Civic Association
has tendered his resignation. For those who know Gregory, the idea
of him stepping aside came as a complete shock. Upon hearing the
news someone quipped, and I preface this was not said in a mean or
derogatory way, but more in tribute and recognition of his
relentless work ethic: "I always thought they would have to carry
him out..." Although the comment drew a chuckle,
everyone in attendance at the monthly meeting showed a sincere and genuine concern for Greg.
Speaking with Greg, he reiterated he was not
giving up, just taking it easy. Additionally, he promised he will
still devote his time and efforts to the association, but will work
in the background from his home at his own pace.
Thank You Greg Szurnicki
For Making Kings Park A
Better Place!

Kings Park Day 2005 |
By Ken Kraska

Some think the official
start of summer is Memorial Day, but in our town it appears "Kings Park Day"
makes the mark. What was originally forecasted to be a disastrous
stormy day, turned out to be one of the most beautiful days we have
seen in recent time. For certain, the weather gods were very
generous.
Saturday, was certainly event filled. To start the day
The Greater Long Island Runner's Club hosted the Annual Kings Park
15k Run. There were 24 runner from Kings Park completing the race.

At 9:30, a few
hundred cyclist peddled their way through 3 plus miles of Kings Park
streets. Starting in the KPHS parking lot down Lawrence to Ashland,
to 25a. Some went to the Waldbaum's on St. Johnland Road (OOOOPS!)
others to the strip mall on 25a and Juniper. After a short break the
group headed back up 25a to the Boulevard, round turn by the KPPC
fire house to the Bike 'n Hike Trail. Down Old Dock to Thompson to
finally end at Main Street.

Rally Shots...
After the race
and rally Main Street filled with a sea of bright yellow shirts. It
seemed every where you walked someone was handing out something
(including me). An array of politicians vying for position on this
November's ballot were on hand to give their spiel and handout their
flyers. Local civic, social and veteran groups greeted the crowd
with their smiles, flags and community spirit. And, the day would
not be complete without Peri Wallach who was handing out the goodies
to all the little children (and some of the big kids too).

There is no
better time to plan a reunion party for those over-the-hill
kids, than on Kings Park Day.
Kings Park Day offers a day of fun for the family and
kids. Not only the little kids, but the big ones too! This year was
no exception as the members of the Classes of '61 to '65 gathered
at Shanahan's on Old Dock Road
to make some new memories while reminiscing the old
days with long lost friends.
