Stop The Sale...

 By Ken Kraska

Stop the sale... Clean up the mess! That was the message a hundred or so Kings Park area residents chanted in front of the offices of New York State Senator John Flanagan on East Main Street in Smithtown this past Tuesday morning. The group, amassed by a few concerned residents, including members of the Kings Park Neighbors' Association,  believe New York State should clean up the site before it sells or transfer the property. To date, all the proposals made by the various bidders have been to densely develop the site. The reasoning for the dense development has been blamed on the developers' inability to accurately determine the cost of remediation. The concerned citizens believe, once this unknown variable has been omitted from the equation, the need to over-develop the site would be greatly diminished.

With only two days notice the group attracted about a hundred or so demonstrators, many of who took time off from work to attend. Based on this turnout, they feel confident they can attract many more followers and are planning rallies at future political events as well as at the offices of other state officials.

Inmates Lend A Hand

 Press Release

Suffolk County inmates Landscape Coast Guard Base, Allowing Crews More Time To Patrol and Train Riverhead, N.Y., October 27, 2005 Thanks to an overture from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, minimum security inmates have recently assumed the landscape work detail at the Eatons Neck Coast Guard Station, thereby allowing Coast Guard personnel more time to concentrate on essentia1 duties such as maritime patrol, search-and-rescue, and Homeland Security initiatives.
Sheriff Alfred C. Tisch, a vocal proponent of inmate education recently introduced the STAR (Sheriff’s training and Assisted Reentry) Program, a series of educational and vocational programs at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility that are designed to assist inmates with employment opportunities upon their reintegration to society. This horticultural program is the first STAR initiative to actively merge vocational training with service lo the community. The inmates assigned to this program have all been carefully selected based on specific criteria and are escorted and constantly supervised by Correction Officers during their vocational sessions.
USCG Station Eatons Neck Executive Petty Officer BMC Rick Bull states “Coast Guard personnel can he reassigned to more integral tasks by utilizing inmates to perform time-consuming landscaping and lawn maintenance”. BMC Ball asserted that, “Sheriff Tisch has provided a great benefit to both the Coast Guard and the people of Long Island. By enlisting county inmates to assume a portion of our routine maintenance, we can direct our assets out on the water where they can provide the greatest impact, such as Homeland
Security, Search and Rescue, and Maritime Law Enforcement missions.

The inmates working at the Eatons Neck Station are enrolled in a six-week intensive classroom program in applied plant science in conjunction with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Yaphank. This program encompasses areas of study including plant structure, pruning and trimming, weed control, landscape design, and tree arid shrub maintenance. These specially chosen inmates are completing the second phase of the horticultural program, a lengthy, practical field application of their classroom study. Inmates chosen for and graduating from this program can expect to gain knowledge, confidence, and an increased opportunity of gainful employment upon their subsequent release.
Brian Ocedek, an inmate serving a one-year sentence at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility states matter of fact, "I would much rather do this job and let the Coast Guard do the important work, like helping people on the water. It’s the one thing that someone in my position can do to give something hack.”
This collaborative agreement between the Sherif's Office and the Coast Guard is a prime example of a program which benefits all parties. The Coast Guard 1iecs up much needed staff to perform vital duties, the Sheriff’s Office furthers its rehabilitative effort, and the community gains productive workers and increased safety and security on the water.

Following the tradition set by the family, Peter’s son learned that art and became part of the company. That company has left its mark on the Smithtown area. Cemetery headstones are the chief component of the business, but it is the numerous memorials that have left the Marmorato legacy on the community. Approximately seventy stones of marble, granite, and fieldstone carry messages of the area’s life. From sports fields to war memorials, to secluded tranquil resting spots, Peter Marmorato has put the town’s feeling into stone.

Sylvia Marks
Kings Park Resident
Editing and Publishing
Museum Projects

Wife, mother, housewife and graphics design instructor at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. It is the graphics department that has effected the Kings Park Heritage Museum for the past ten years. Through her talent, effort and generosity the museum has produced and published nearly fifty booklets, pamphlets and pictorials concerning Kings Park heritage.
For a year the Heritage Museum struggled to spread the historical mission that signified a need for a museum in the community. A chance encounter with Mrs. Marks led to the creation of the Light & Lively History of Kings Park.
Early plans called for two or three issues. Ten years later we have 33 issues? Sylvia allowed the museum to gather material from all over the country, package it and distribute it back across the country and Europe.
Through her guidance, a series was developed on one woman’s observations of the Middle East; another series grew from ethnic differences; a series on role models has been started; and an eclectic series on pictures, trips and hobbies has sprung up.
Sylvia Marks, with no fanfare whatsoever, has bridged the gap between two public entities and forged productions beneficial to both. The Museum’s identity is known to many in a very large part because of Mrs. Mark’s energy.
