Purpose

Sharing is an integral element of being a member of a community. At the Father John Papallo Lodge we also believe education is key to the development of an individuals character. The Lodge awards scholarships to foster education and to grant a one time cash award to be used to defray some of the costs of tuition in a college or vocational school.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a graduating high school student who is the child or grandchild of an active member in good standing of the Father John Papallo Lodge #2684, Order Sons of Italy in America. An active member is one who has been a member for at least one year prior to the application for scholarship or award.

Criteria

An application containing the following information must be submitted to the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee by May 1st of the year of graduation:

bulletOfficial transcripts of grades including the first semester of 12th grade.
bulletTwo letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselors.
bulletA brief essay, (250 words or less) summarizing educational and career goals.

 

Scholarships & Awards

FATHER JOHN PAPALLO LODGE #2684, ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA, SCHOLARSHIPS:

Three Lodge Scholarships are awarded to successful candidates with emphasis on academic achievement. One of the eligible winners must be a student from Kings Park High School. Any child or grandchild of a member in good standing of the Father John Papallo Lodge #2684 may apply. The sponsor’s membership must be current for at least one year prior to the application.

FATHER JOHN PAPALLO LODGE #2684, ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA, GRANT:

This award is granted to a worthy student who may not have achieved high academic success but who has demonstrated  a strong motivation to achieve to his or her capacity. He or she must also show a commitment to community service. Any child or grandchild of a member in good standing of the Father John Papallo Lodge #2684 may apply. The sponsor’s membership must be current for at least one year prior to the application.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Academic eligibility for the Lodge Scholarships means  that the successful candidate will have achieved an average of 85% or a grade point average of at least 3.0 in his or her high school career up to and including the first half of twelfth grade. The candidate must be planning to attend a full time program  at a college or other Institution of higher learning after graduation.

The letters of recommendation must reflect a strong academic commitment as well as character and effort.

The essay must summarize the career goals of the candidate and how he or she has contributed to bettering his or her community. The Committee will also consider how aware the candidate is of  the values learned from his or her Italian-American Heritage. 

The awards are not given only  for academic achievement. They will be awarded based upon the letters of recommendation  and the student essay as indications of the commitment of the candidates to community service and their Italian-American Heritage.

Membership in the Father John Papallo Lodge is required only for the recipients of the Lodge Scholarships.
